Vaginal Bleeding Between Periods

Although vaginal bleeding typically occurs on the first day of your menstrual cycle, you may notice that it happens between periods too. This is generally not always a reason for serious concern, as the causes are natural: light spotting or bleeding during the first stage of pregnancy when the fertilized egg implants in the uterus. It can also be an ovulatory bleeding that occurs approximately on the 14-16 of your cycle (assuming the 28 day cycle). At the same time, there are many factors that may cause intermenstrual bleeding, also known as metrorrhagia.

Hormonal imbalance is one of the most common reasons for spotting between periods. It may occur during the first 3 months when you start or stop taking contraceptive pills, injections, or intravaginal contraception. Sometimes it is a sign of ovary or thyroid gland dysfunction or pregnancy complications if you’re pregnant.

Besides, metrorrhagia can be a sign of cancer, infection or uterine fibroids.

Seek medical help if the bleeding between periods has a pattern or if your experience additional symptoms like dizziness, pain, fever or fatigue.
