Birth control pills are considered to be some of the most effective contraceptives that prevent unwanted pregnancy, but they may also have side effects, most of which are supposed to go away after a few weeks.

  1. Nausea is a common side effect among women who are first taking the pill.
  2. Spotting between your periods may also occur after you’ve started taking pills.
  3. Headaches are sometimes a side effect of birth control pills too.
  4. Breast tenderness or enlargement may occur due to the hormones in the pills, but it will subside in a few weeks.
  5. You may miss your period on birth control, especially at the very start.

You may also notice mood swings, a decrease in your sex drive, or a slight weight gain. If you start to have pale or yellow skin, fatigue, weakness, difficulty walking while taking the pills or if any of the symptoms get painful and severe, see your doctor. It’s important to monitor yourself for other side effects such as nausea, headaches, depression, dizziness, or decreased libido.
