About 40% of the world’s population are at risk of iodine deficiency. Iodine deficiency can lead to maternal and fetal hypothyroidism and is associated with serious health conditions, including growth retardation and cretinism.
Regular iodine consumption is recommended, but during pregnancy the need for iodine significantly increases. Iodine is found in food as an additive (for example, salt) or is available as a food supplement. The World Health Organisation recommends 250 mcg/day during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. It’s important to ensure a healthy intake of iodine, as an excess of iodine is not healthy either. You should not take iodine without first consulting your GP, as they will prescribe based on the examination of your thyroid gland.
