Nutrition Recommendations During the Luteal Phase

During the luteal phase, most carbohydrates get stored in reserves and susceptibility to insulin is reduced. The corpus luteum produces progesterone, which has a relaxing effect not only on the uterus, but also on the digestive and excretory systems, which can result in frequent urination. Some women might also suffer from bloating and constipation, caused by the decrease of intestinal motility. Low-calorie food rich in vegetable fiber, like whole grains, cabbage and broccoli are recommended during the luteal phase.

Low levels of estrogen and high levels of progesterone cause the decrease of serotonin production. Because of this your body might require a large quantity of carbohydrates, especially of the simple variety - starchy foods and sweets. Don’t surrender to such cravings and try to limit the consumption of fats and proteins of animal origin.
