How Woman's Mood Changes Depending On The Phase Of The Menstrual Cycle

It's a truth well-known that women are prone to mood swings during their menstrual cycle as there are various phases of hormonal background change.

The first phase

If a woman has obviously expressed PMS, then during the first days its manifestations decreases and sometimes even disappears completely. However, this period is often accompanied by aching pains in the lower abdomen, and general weakness and aching in the lower back which result in a bad mood.

Along with all of this, the concentration of prostaglandins - substances contributing to uterine contractions and causing those very unpleasant sensations - increases in a woman's body. They can affect the mood during this period. However, women can and should fight the pain.

1. Diet

During those days, a lighter diet is recommended and the usual drinks should be replaced with plain water. Products containing caffeine (coffee, tea, dark chocolate), strong meat broths, heavy food, and alcohol should also be avoided.

2. Moderate activity

Most girls try to avoid an active lifestyle and lie down more during their menstruation, which is not advisable. Moderate physical activity, doing light sports activities and even walking can literally produce miracles.

Movement stimulates blood circulation, including in the organs of the pelvis, and blood oxygen saturation leads to a more effective withdrawal of toxins, which positively affects well-being. Women who regularly do sports are recommended to somewhat decrease the intensity of their physical training.

Finally, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and antispasmatic drugs will help alleviate the pain.

Days 3-14

From around the third day of the cycle up to ovulation, which usually occurs in the middle, the woman feels better. Unpleasant sensations gradually fade, the level of estrogen increases and testosterone grows, providing a cheerful mood, vigor, increased work efficiency, quick reactions, and better concentration.

In the days just before ovulation, the woman becomes playful due to the same hormones. They contribute to relaxed behavior, communication with the members of the opposite sex and even flirting. The body is getting ready to conceive.

The second phase

After ovulation, the amount of estrogen gradually decreases, which also affects the woman's mood and well-being. The increasing level of progesterone promotes a shift to the accumulation mode. Irrespective of whether conception has occurred or not, the body starts accumulating energy, water, and nutrients which will eventually be transferred to the future child.

However, testosterone still provides vigor and a high libido. At the same time, during the second phase, women become more apathetic, relaxed, balanced, and a bit lazy due to the effect of the same hormone.

During the last few days of menstruation, many women experience PMS, though it's worth mentioning that its manifestations are different based on the character and temperament of a woman. Most often, this period is accompanied by suspicion, aggression, sensitivity, and tearfulness, caused by the changes in the hormonal background.

The support and understanding of loved ones, as well as an adjustment to the mood and well-being, are effective ways of dealing with such cycle changes. Nevertheless, women shouldn't assume that their emotional changes can be justified by hormones. They should do their best to control themselves.
